Thelma Hutchins Pembroke, 97, of Burnsville, NC, widow of Lawrence F. Pembroke, died peacefully at home Monday, February 4, 2013 after a period of declining health. A native of Yancey County, Mrs. Pembroke was born in Pensacola, NC to James R. and Serena McMahan Hutchins. She lived most of her life in Haywood County, returning to Burnsville when her husband retired from Champion Paper & Fiber Company.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers: Willie Edward Hutchins, Gus Hutchins, Arthur Lee Hutchins, Thomas David Hutchins, Frank R. Hutchins, and Oliver Hutchins; and three sisters: Lillian H. Teems, Lucy H. Nichols Vitek, and Julia H. Robertson.
Thelma is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Gordon D. MacBryde of Advance; two grandsons, Colin L. MacBryde of Concord, NC and Ian N. MacBryde of Charleston, SC; a sister, Georgia H. Hayes of Asheville; two sisters-in-law, Helen S. Hutchins and Frieda W. Hutchins of Asheville; and twenty-six (26) nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services at 7 PM, Wednesday, February 6, 2013. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:00 immediately prior to this service. Burial will take place at Mountain View Cemetery, Black Mountain, NC, at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 7, 2013.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Red Cross, the Yancey County Committee on Aging, or the food bank of your choice.
