Arthelia "Tillie" Brooks

Arthelia "Tillie" Brooks, age 95, formerly of the South Toe Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 at Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville. Tillie was the oldest of seven children to the late John and Gertrude Hilleary and was the wife of the late Arle Brooks. She will always be known as a community and church leader who donated many years of her life to Yancey County and the Methodist Church and was one of the first drivers of the Book Mobile in Yancey County. She was an artist who loved to paint, travel, do needlepoint and work in her flowers. Tillie also had a radio talk show on WTOE, taught school at Harris Elementary for three years and wrote a book titled, "The Backside of Yesteryear".

Survivors include her three daughters: Paula Brooks of Portland, Oregon, Marla Brooks of Concord, and Dena Langowski of Gardena, California; a sister, Olive Jackson of Hayes, Alaska and a brother, Edward Hilleary and wife, Eleanor, of Elkins, WV; three grandsons: Rob Hoover and wife, Dee, Derek Hoover and wife, Rebecca, and Jamie Hoover and wife, Susan; and six great-grandchildren: Jeremy, Harrison, Jackson, Jay, Ethan and Elizabeth Hoover.

A memorial service to celebrate Tillie's life will be held at 2 p. m. on Saturday, November 6th at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a former member. Rev. Wess Sharpe and Chaplain Don Turman will officiate. Light refreshments will follow.

The family request that memorial donations please be made to the Higgins Memorial UMC Missions Fund or to other local missions.
