Bonnie Huffman Sluder, age 92, formerly of the Squirrel Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 22nd, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Greenville, TN. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Staples and Eula Huffman and the wife of the late Robert Lee Sluder, who passed away in 2010. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Dazene Hicks and Blanche Shell; brothers: Larmon Huffman, Lance Huffman and Pete Huffman. She was the oldest living member of Chestnut Dale Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Bonnie was very talented with evergreens and won the National Wreath Competition in Anaheim, CA.
Surviving is her son, Jimmy Sluder and wife, Joy, of Greenville, TN; two grandchildren, Jimmy Sluder II, of Granby, CO and Brooke S. Carlyle and husband, Chris, of Wake Forest; great grandchildren, Matthew Gregory Carlyle and Ethan Robert Carlyle; siblings: Glenna Ollis and husband, Jack, and Conley Huffman and wife, Carolyn, all of Squirrel Creek; sister-in-law, Mildred Huffman of Ingalls. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 27th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in Mountain Home National Veterans Cemetery in Johnson City, TN. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Pat Hicks, Larmon Huffman, Pete Huffman, Lance Huffman and Ray Shell.
