Charles R. Buchanan

Charles R. Buchanan, age 75, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 6th, 2018 at his home.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Fred and Etta Day Buchanan.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Pearl Buchanan who passed away in 1989; a daughter, Charlene Buchanan Chrisawn who passed away in 2005 and brothers:  Frank, Lee and Bill Buchanan.  He was a member of Altapass Baptist Church and owner and operator of Gem Mountain for 31 years.  Next to his family, Gem Mountain was his pride and joy.  Charles enjoyed horses, NASCAR racing and was a Redskins football fan.  He was well known in the community and always made you feel like you were at home.  He was a loving husband, father,  grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. 

            Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 28 years, Kay Cox Buchanan, with whom he spent every moment he could; children: Richard Cook and wife, Elberta, of Danville, VA,  Danyeale Buchanan Forbes and husband, Jim, of Spruce Pine,  Ben Cook and fiancé, Melissa Moses, of Roanoke, VA  and Madonna Cook Fox and husband, Tim, of Burnsville;  grandchildren:  Dalton Cook, Sierra Cook Hutcheson and husband, Tyler, Dylen Fischl, Carolina Wheeler, Caleb Forbes, Joshua Forbes, Joseph Forbes, Drew Cook, Addison Cook, Layton Fox and Logan Fox; great-grandson, who he had a very special connection with, Easton Hutcheson; a brother, Lawrence Buchanan and wife, Paulette, of Newdale; special brother-in-law, Winston Hefner and sister-in-law, Loretta Cox Hefner.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 9th in Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church.  Rev. Dallas Renfro and Rev. Steve Sisk will officiate.  Burial will follow in Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
