Charlie Eugene Briggs, age 72, of the Cane River Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 9th, 2020 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Louise Higgins Robinson of Asheville and the late Junior Briggs. Charlie was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He was an active member of the American Legion and loved woodworking and fishing.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Louise Higgins Robinson and her husband, Herman, of Asheville, is his loving wife of 52 years, Johnnie Silvers Briggs; son, Charlie Eugene Briggs II of the home; daughter, Dawn Briggs Penland of Cane River; grandchildren: Trey Penland and Tricia Penland, both of Burnsville; and a sister, Donna Freeman and husband, Larry, of Burnsville. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Andrew Thomas will officiate. Military honors will follow the service conducted by the Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter #57 D.A.V. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Edwards Cemetery on Langford Branch.
