Edward “June” Cooke, Jr., age 82, of the Cranberry Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Avery County, he was the son of the late Ed and Verta Cooke. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Freeman Cooke; sons: Billy McCoury, Sammy McCoury and Kirk Cooke; one grandson, Johnny McCoury and a nephew, Sim Greene. June was a member of Lewis Chapel Freewill Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years and shared his love for Jesus. He was the owner and operator of Cranberry Tire. He was an avid reader and would read anything from encyclopedias to westerns, but his favorite book to read was the Bible, which he had read through numerous times. He had a love for bluegrass music and had taught himself to play various musical instruments. He was an enthusiastic storyteller and shared his vast wisdom with his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Zanah McCoury of Austinville, VA., Pam Williams of Spruce Pine, Sarah Young (Woodie), of Minneapolis, Hugh Cooke (Betty) of Roan Mountain, and Karen Cooke (Richard Hicks) of Elk Park. He was “the best” Papaw to seventeen grandchildren, thirty five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. He was a loving brother to one sister, Louise Greene of Newland. A niece and nephew also survive.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17th at Lewis Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Brothers Michael Sheppard, Richard Hicks and Gene Carver will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
