Ethel Shook Rice, of the Foster Creek Community, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019. Ethel was born July 3, 1925 to the late Hubert and Macie Shook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Rice; son-in-law, Kenneth Crowder; and brothers: James, Joe, and Fred Shook.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Crowder; grandson; Ryan Crowder and wife, Rachel; great granddaughter, Olivia; sisters: Frances Revis, Noreen Beard, and Ruth Sutherland; brothers: Jerry, Ned, and Ed Shook. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Rice worked for many years at Hammerlund Manufacturing. She also enjoyed farming, gardening, and canning. Her homemade soup and raspberry jam was a family favorite. She spent her life loving and caring for her family, friends, and neighbors. The work and kindness her hands have shown can never be told, nor replaced. She was a member of Laurelton Chapel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Funeral Services will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Jake Fender officiating. Graveside Services will be held in the Justice-Rice Cemetery.
