George Gortney, age 85, of Green Mountain, went home with the Lord on Sunday, May 26th, 2019 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Harris and Della Woody Gortney. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Stewart Gortney, who passed away in 1976; second wife, Evelyn Willis Gortney, who passed away in 2008; brothers: Burdette and Oscar Gortney and sisters: Elvie Beaver, Margaret Boone, Joyce McIntosh, Flave Thomas, Venus Johnson and Jenny Cognil. He was a member of the Estatoe Church of God who love NASCAR, wrestling and his cat, Sappy.
Surviving is his daughters: Georgia Ann Gortney and Patricia Gortney both of Burnsville; brother, Ted Gortney of Hickory and special nephew, Teddy Boone of Burnsville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 5 pm., Thursday, May 30th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Todd Robinson and Rev. Ken Nelson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
