Howard Thomas, age 76, of the Celo Community, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 21st, 2018 at Mission Memorial Campus. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late George and Marie Riddle Thomas. In addition to his parents, Howard was also preceded in death by a sister, Brenda McCurry. Howard was a founding member of Freedom Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday School for over fifteen years. He retired from Lexington Furniture after many years of dedicated service. Howard enjoyed spending time outdoors, and was particularly fond of camping and all aspects acquiring firewood.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of twenty eight and a half years, Alma Buchanan Thomas; children: Martha Thomas Murphy and her husband, Andrews, of Madison and David Thomas and his wife, Kathy, of Greensboro; grandchildren: Andrew, Luke and Addie Thomas; great- granddaughter, Jocelyn Thomas; sisters: Adaleen Briggs, Dorothy Gibbs and Elizabeth Banks, all of Burnsville and a brother, Kenneth Thomas and his wife, Myrna, of Granite Falls. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Claude Carroll will officiate. Burial will follow in the Patton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
