James Martin Carroll, age, 77, of Possum Trot, passed away on Sunday, December 29th, 2019 after a lengthy illness. A native of Yancey County, he was one of 16 children to the late Crawford and Hettie Hunter Carroll. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Carroll who passed away in 2005, brothers: Charles, Junior, Roy, Mack, Ray and Dewayne Carroll; sisters: Evelyn Boone and Maude Carroll and a granddaughter, Jessica.
Before James became blind, he loved watching TV and going to local games. He was an avid NASCAR fan, Carolina Tar Heel fan and Mountain Heritage High School Cougar fan, being named #1 Fan of the Year. After his vision left, he loved listening to the MHHS Cougar games on WKYK and was extremely excited when 940 AM became WKYK 104.7 FM because he could hear the games loud and clear. He will always be remembered as a loving daddy, papaw and brother.
Left to cherish his memories is his daughter, Lesa Carroll; son, Michael Carroll; and only grandchild, Casey Shepherd and husband, Stephen, who James called "Steve" all of Burnsville; sisters: Jane Bollinger, of Blacksburg, SC, Mildred Letterman and husband, Johnny, of Plum Branch, Lois Belcher and husband, Dave, of Elijay, GA and Faye Hudrow of Calhoun, GA; brothers: JC Carroll of Marion, Hoyle Carroll and wife, Joanne, also of Marion, and Phillip Carroll and wife, Becky, of Mars Hill. Numerous extended family members also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 2nd in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the services. Rev. Stacey Elkins and Rev. Cline Hensley will officiate. Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Baccus Ray Cemetery on Gibbs Road.
