James Ray Gibbs, age 89, of South Toe, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 18th, 2018 at his home. He was born in Mitchell County to the late Harris and Pearl Silver Gibbs and has been a resident of South Toe most of his life. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Gibbs; a sister, Brenda Charlene Young and a brother-in-law, Cecil Greer. Ray was a US Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He loved trout fishing and hunting. He adored his wife, Emma, and took amazing care of her through every step of her illness with tender loving care.
Left to cherish his memories is his loving wife of almost 62 years, Emma Lou Burleson Gibbs; sons: Jeff R. Gibbs and wife, Harriet G. Taylor Gibbs and Joel R. Gibbs and wife, Georgiana Serigny Gibbs; granddaughters: Emma Jane Gibbs Deyton and Sarah Ray Gibbs Hensley and husband, Robby Lee Hensley, grandson, Jeremy R. Gibbs; great-grandchildren: Alexis M. Gibbs, Ethan Ray McRobie, Jacob Paul Deyton, Emmitt Budge Deyton, Raylee Gail Hensley and a baby on the way; step-grandchildren: Shane P. Hendrix and April M. Hendrix Stone; brother, Ken Gibbs and wife, Brenda; twin sister, Faye Gibbs Greer and sister, Jeannette Gibbs Langford and husband, Robert.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 23rd in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Funeral Services will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Ray's longtime friend, Rev. Vernon Buchanan, officiating. Burial will follow in the Carroway Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Ethan McRobie, Robby L. Hensley, Brian Gibbs, Brian Garland, Kenny Buchanan and Spencer Buchanan.
