Joanne Briscoe Smith, age 84, of the Altapass Community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 29th 2018 at her home. A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late M.B. and Annie Marrice Beam and the wife of the late Daniel L. Briscoe and Edrew Cornelius Smith. She was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Briscoe. Joanne and her first husband Dan managed Briscoe Flea Market in Marion for many years. She later moved to Ellenboro and she became the Activities Director at Fairhaven Nursing Facility before moving to Spruce Pine where she loved working for a number of years at Spruce Pine Community Hospital and joined her church, Altapass Baptist Church, where she was very devoted until her declining health.
Surviving is her daughter, Catherine Anna Briscoe of Steamboat Springs, CO; step-children: Stanly Smith of Rutherfordton, Dale Smith and wife, Diane, of Rutherfordton, Paul Smith of Forest City, Carl Smith and wife, Sharon, of Rutherfordton and Shannon Parker Smith of Rutherfordton; three grandchildren: Jesse Junker, Jennifer Sparks and Jeremy Briscoe; nine step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; ten step-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Nancy Beam of Ellenboro and two special friends who helped watch over her, Denny and Joyce Woody of Spruce Pine.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, January 3rd at Altapass Baptist Church. Dr. Marcus Benfield and Rev. Steve Sisk will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow in Union Mills at Oak Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
