Kenneth B. Long, Sr., age 75, formerly of Davidson/Concord in Mecklenburg County, NC and recently of Newland in Avery County, NC, was ushered into the arms of Jesus and called home to be with the Lord on April 14th, 2017, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Long will be officiated by Rev. Allen Laws on Tuesday, April 18th at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 471 N. US Highway 19E, Newland NC. Visitation will take place from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm with a service immediately thereafter from 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM. Interment will follow at Elk Park Cemetery (Brooks Shell Road).
Born on July 28, 1941, to the late James ("Jimmy") D. Long, Jr. and Theatus ("Thea") Ward Long, Kenneth grew up in Charlotte, NC. He attended West Mecklenburg, where he met and fell in love with his first wife, the late Janet V. Wentz. They were happily married for 25 years and had two children together. Ken found love again later in life with the late Tonda K. Tucker, a marriage that lasted for 17 years. Ken was employed by the United States postal service for over 40 years. He enjoyed the beauty of the NC mountains, spending time and vacationing with his family, growing tomatoes in his garden and attending plays, ball games and other events his grandchildren.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Janet V. Wentz; second wife, Tonda K. Long; nephew, Adrian M. Ferguson; beloved son of Sherri Long and Randy Ferguson; and great niece, Reagan O. Ferguson, born to Mark and Lauren Ferguson, son of Sherri Long and Randy Ferguson.
Mr. Long is survived by a blended family, including two children, Deborah L. Gould and husband, Paul, of Jackson, NJ; Kenneth B. Long, Jr. and wife, Pilar, of Huntersville, NC; step-daughter, Rhonda T. Johnson and husband, Vann, of Crossnore, NC; grandsons, Taylor and Hunter Gould and Kenny and Christian Long; step-grandsons, Lane and Reed Johnson; three sisters, Barbara A. Griffin and husband, Johnny of Stallings, NC; Susan F. Ashley and husband, Walt of Burlington, KY; and Sherri K. Ferguson and husband Randy of Sparta, KY.
