Maphra Briggs, 87, of the Jacks Creek Community, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Weaverville Brian Center. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rex and Laura Silvers Hensley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Briggs, who passed away in 2015; seven sisters: Lucy Jones, Ethel Tipton, Irene Dale, Hazel Sisk, Juanita McIntosh, Maxine Ballew and Princes Hensley and two brothers: Bob Hensley and Ernest Hensley. Maphra retired from the Yancey County School System.
Surviving is a daughter, Pat Randolph and husband, Bill; sons: Michael Briggs and wife, Joyce, and Randy Briggs and wife, Darlene, all of Burnsville; grandchildren: Brent and Shane Briggs and Brandon, Ali and Branson Randolph; great-grandchildren: Elijah, Willa and Caspian Briggs and Esmae and Maslyn Briggs and Lyryn Randolph and brothers: Bill Hensley and wife, Grace, and Jack Hensley all of Burnsville.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 26th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Stacy Elkins will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Private burial will be in the Briggs Cemetery.
