Phyllis Rathburn Ray, age 77, of the Pensacola Community, passed away on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018 at St. Joseph's Campus following a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Johncie "Dot" McMahan Rathburn. She was also preceded in death by a special nephew, Bob Edson. Phyllis was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church. Phyllis retired from being a CNA after 30 years and enjoyed shopping with her daughter, gardening and working puzzles. She loved spending time with her family, relaxing at Lake Keowee and having long conversations with her loved ones. She adored her dog Coby, also known as "Mama's Baby Boy".
Left to cherish her memories is her husband, Bobby Gene Ray; daughter, Pam Bailey and husband, Steve, of Burnsville; sons: Ricky Gardner and wife, Donna, of Marion and David Gardner and wife, Dona, of Seneca, SC; step-children: Terri Cloninger and husband, Mike, of Dallas, Roger Ray of Burnsville and Danny Ray and wife, Pam, of Morganton; grandchildren: Andrea Bailey, Steven Bailey, Bethany Burleson (Jacob), Kati Gardner, Carlton Gardner and Gracie Gardner; step-grandchildren: Thomas and Tabitha Cloninger; sister, Doris Wheeler of Burnsville and a special niece, Connie Edson and her daughter, Julia, of Burnsville. Several other extended family members also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 11th in Laurel Branch Baptist Church. Pastor Andy Phillips and Rev. Ray Strickland will officiate. Burial will follow in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
