Rev. Harvey Sharpe, age 72, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 19th, 2019 at St. Josephs Hospital in Asheville. A native of Columbia, SC he was a son of the late Jewel Harvey Sharpe, Sr. and Ethel Bingham Sharpe. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dewayne Sharpe, who passed away June 21st, 1969.
Rev. Sharpe served 21 1/2 years in the Marine Corps, having served during the Vietnam Era, traveling the world. He retired on June 30, 1986 as a Sgt. Major E-9. In Yancey County, he became the Baptist Association Director of the Yancey Baptist Association having served for almost 15 years. In his ministry, Rev. Sharpe pastored four churches; three in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. Giving back to his communities was very important to Harvey. Some organizations he was involved with was being Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Yancey County Senior Center for several years, where he also led a Bible study class. He was a member of the American Legion Post #122, the Mt. Mitchell Detachment #1266 of the Marine Corp League, a devoted member of Burnsville Faith Baptist Church, involved with the Family Violence Coalition, and also of MY MEDS. Rev. Sharpe's primary focus in life was being a mentor to many and to share the gospel.
Left to cherish his memories is his loving bride of 50 years, Loretta Beth Sharpe; son, Timothy Michael Sharpe and wife, Barbara, of Hope Mills, NC; daughter, Renee Silver and husband, Jimmy, of Savannah, GA; three grandchildren: Alec Sharpe, Sierra Silver and Madison Silver; siblings: Carl Sharpe and wife, Sherry, of Gaston, SC, Pat Powell and husband, Hallie, of Gaston, SC, Shirley Park of Greenville, SC, Jewel Harvey Sharpe, Jr. and wife, Susannah, of Lexington, SC and June Hardee and husband, Kenny, of Lexington, SC. Numerous extended family members also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 23rd in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Dwight Boone, Jr. and Rev. Howard Suttles will officiate. Military Honors will follow in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Members of the Marine Corp League and American Legion Post are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. The family extends an invitation to all active and former Marines to sit with the family during the service.
