Roger Ballew, age 75, of the Celo Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 4th, 2018. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thelma Gouge. Roger attended Fellowship Baptist Church on Squirrel Creek in Avery County. He loved cars, hot rods, fishing, and taking care of his wife, Opal. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Opal Ballew; daughter, Deitra Ballew Ray and husband, Curtis, of the Celo Community; sons: Rev. James Ballew and wife, Melanie, of the Hamrick Community and Rodney Ballew of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren: Haley Horney and husband, Ian, Bethany Ballew, Ethan Ballew, Kenny Ray, Courtney Ledford and husband, Jimmy, Emily Ray and Paradise Miller; great-grandchildren: Tayton Ray, Dawson Ray, Easton Ray and Kinsey Lane Ledford; sister, Martha Garmon of Celo; brothers: John Ballew of Celo and Mike Ballew and wife, Leila, of Spruce Pine and two nephews: Bryant Garmon and Tommy Garmon.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon on Monday, July 9th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Graveside services will follow the visitation in the John Ray Family Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Silvers and his son, Rev. James Ballew to officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.
