Ruth Edwards Hensley, age 83, of the Pensacola Community, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, May 1, 2017 at Mission Memorial Hospital. Born September 27th, 1933, a native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Florence Hylemon Edwards. She was also preceded in death by five brothers; seven sisters and a son, Hank Hensley. Ruth was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the wife of Gudger Hensley for over 65 years. Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by each.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Ruby McCurry (Johnny), Rita Hensley and Juanita Geouge (Randy) all of Burnsville; two sons: Bill Hensley (Joyce) of Burnsville and Roger Hensley (Laurie) of Bakersville; daughters-in-law: Delores Hensley of St. Augustine, FL and Jean Edwards of Burnsville, whom she loved like a daughter; grandchildren: Shannon Hughes (Dawn) of Asheville, Will Hensley (Jessica) of Burnsville, Velena Geraci (Matt) of Burnsville, Candida Balliet (Andy) of Burnsville, Jason McCurry (Tracy) of Burnsville, Josh Hensley (Rebecca) of Burnsville, Cortnie Hensley (Michael Robinson) of Spruce Pine, Harley Hensley of VA and Daniel Hensley of Asheville and great-grandchildren: Whitney, Mackenzie, Kylie and Kadence Carpenter, Kingston Robinson, Autumn Hensley, Carson Hensley, Alex, Ashe, Ceileigh Balliet, Emma and Amy McCurry, Lincoln Hughes, Summer, Aaron, Maya, Hannah and Ayla Geraci.
Ruth was a member of Unity Baptist Church for over thirty five years. She loved her church family as if they were her own. She enjoyed reading her Bible, sewing, working in her flowers, yard selling and giving and receiving cards from her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 4th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Jr. Honeycutt, Preacher Nathaniel Ayers and Preacher Bobby Silver will officiate. Burial will follow in the Marietta Adkins Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandson's. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers Ruth's request was to make donations to St. Judes Children's Hospital at PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
