Timothy Flay Hensley, 63, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018, at Mission Hospital following a brief illness. Born on February 10, 1955, he was the son of the late Flay and Lydia (Ingle) Hensley. He graduated from Cane River High School, and he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Carolina University. He served as Career and Technical Education Director for Mitchell and Yancey County Schools, and after retirement, he continued to work with and advocate for Career and Technical Education through his work with Buncombe County Schools. He was a member of Burnsville Masonic Lodge, where he served as Master, and a volunteer firefighter with West Yancey Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Burnsville, where he served as a deacon for many years. In his free time, he was a fisherman, a master craftsman, and an avid Tar Heel fan. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a faithful servant of God.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 36 years, Donna (McIntosh) Hensley, of Burnsville, his son, Dr. Timothy Ryan Hensley (Sarah), of Weaverville, his daughter, Lauren Hensley Mathis (Joshua), of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, and his sister, Dr. Susan Hensley, of Asheville. He was a doting grandfather to Jackson Ryan Hensley and Lydia Kathryn Mathis, who lovingly called him “Grand,” and he loved his children’s spouses as if they were his own children.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 1st, 2018 at 7 P.M. at First Baptist Church of Burnsville. Rev. Tommy James will officiate. Masonic Rites will be provided by Burnsville Masonic Lodge #717 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends prior to funeral services, from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M., at the church. Interment will be private and will be at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. At other times, family and friends will be gathering at the home of Ryan and Sarah Hensley in Weaverville.
